Matt Aldred reunites with U-M coach Dusty May serving as the University of Michigan basketball program's head strength and conditioning coach after spending the last six years with Furman University in the same capacity. He will also work with the U-M men's golf program.
Aldred and May worked previously during the 2017-18 season at the University of Florida.
In his first season at Michigan (2024-25), Aldred helped the Wolverines win the Big Ten Tournament title, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In U-M’s first NCAA tournament appearance since 2021-22, the Wolverines advanced to the second weekend, ultimately falling to No. 1 Auburn in the Sweet 16. Michigan finished the season with a 27-10 record and a 14-6 record in the Big Ten.
Before coming to Ann Arbor, Aldred spent his final year at Furman holding the title of assistant head coach/director of basketball performance, becoming the nation's first basketball strength and conditioning coach to gain this promotion.
In 2023, Aldred helped the Paladins win the SoCon regular season title (15-3) and SoCon Tournament title giving Furman the school's first NCAA Tournament bid since 1980. In the first round, Furman knocked off ACC champion Virginia, 68-67, before falling to eventual Final Four and national runner-up San Diego State (75-52) in the second round.
In addition to working with the athletic department, Aldred collaborated with the Furman Health Science department to produce research with Professor Scott Murr and athletic trainer Justin Games. The paper, "Monitoring Countermovement Jump Performance for Division I Basketball Players over the Competitive Season," focused on force plate data collected during the 2021-22 season and was published by the American Journal of Sport Science.
Beginning his coaching career, Aldred was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Florida for one season (2017-18). Working alongside May, who was also an assistant coach under head coach Mike White, Aldred's duties included assisting the men's and women's basketball programs and overseeing the strength training program for the men's tennis program.
A native of Eastbourne, England, Aldred is a 2010 graduate of Loughborough University in England where he completed work on his sport and exercise science degree. Moving to the United States, Aldred received his master's degree in exercise science from the University of West Florida in 2012. In 2017 he added a second master's degree in human resource management from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Aldred holds Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist qualifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is CPR AED qualified by the American Heart Association. He is trained in the Fascial Abrasion Technique (FIT Institute) and Frederick Stretch Therapy Level I.
He is also one of three basketball strength & conditioning coaches in the country to currently have a continued education course for other coaches to take and earn professional credit, he co-produced "Fascial Mechanics" in April 2024.
Married to his wife Maria (Aloe), the Aldred's welcomed their daughter, Lucy, in March 2024.
